Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artwork and inspiration. The actress worked as a late night nurse, allowing her aunt the time she needed in her days to be able to enjoy the arts, literature and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with parents who were knowledgeable about society and taught her how to utilize the arts to find a way of expressing herself. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having the task of watching the family home, and then looking through the trash of one of members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism and the jobs she was assigned, she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was brought in right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. She was promoted to the position and set up her own firm of public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
