Perry's initial attempts at stardom with mainstream artists were not successful. Perry was signed to two labels before being was later dropped from them prior to any recordings had been released. Capitol Records did release Perry's Ur So Gay, which garnered modest attention in 2007 due to its jolly title. I Kissed a Girl - an ode of sexual curiosity - was dropped a couple of months later. It featured a hard electro-pop sound, and had a strong stance. The song caused controversy many critics claiming that it promoted sexual relations between men and women, while others claiming that the sexually explicit scenario depicted was designed to appeal to the men's fantasies. But the mixture of titillation and polished melodicism contributed to the fact that I Kissed a Girl become an instant hit in a variety of countries and drove the album sales of the Boys (2008). Hot N Cold's sharp and energetic second single also proved extremely popular. The album Perry wrote in large part sold more than three million copies.
